Thumbs up World War 3 - Battlefield-style shooter

World War 3 looks like a game that might interest the Timeless Community, seeing as:
    1) World War 3 looks like it is heavily influenced by Battlefield games of the past; and
    2) EA is not allowing community servers for Battlefield V, but this game supposedly supports community-run servers.

WW3 looks very much like a Battlefield 3-4 clone, especially when you see the UI in the videos (I'd be amazed if EA didn't try to sue them at some point).

WW3 is a military shooter set in the near future in Europe - the urban map in the following videos (which is the only map they've officially shown so far) is based on Warsaw in Poland (as the dev team is Polish).

WW3 is releasing this autumn in Steam Early Access. Steam page link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/674020/World_War_3/

I will let these preview videos speak for themselves:

    LevelCap's impressions after hands-on:

    JackFrags first impressions:

Thanks to Noppa for giving me the heads-up on this game and finding the videos. All my information comes from those videos, and a few others I couldn't link because of your 3 vids per post limit, so I won't repeat too much info here.

The devs have said there will be no pay-to-win microtransactions and all map DLC releases will be free. They want the design of WW3 to promote strong teamplay.

The developers, The Farm 51, are self-publishing WW3 - previously they made Painkiller Hell & Damnation for THQ Nordic, and various other games.

The game is likely to have less weapons than a regular Battlefield game to start with, but will have a lot more attachments per gun allowing you to customise how a weapon handles.

Once the game fully releases, assuming it still has a great deal of good buzz around it, a lot of my friends and I are planning to play WW3. If Timeless did decide to run a server for this I would certainly be pushing all my Steam and Teamspeak friends to play on Timeless servers for it, as you guys always ran the best Battlefield servers back in the day when I played a lot of Battlefield (2142, BC2 & BF3).

I felt bad for this community when I heard that Battlefield 5, like Battlefield 1, would not have community run servers (I had started to get hyped for BF5 myself, until some of EA's recent shenanigans) - so when Noppa linked me these videos on WW3, and I started getting hyped for that instead, I thought I'd ensure you guys had heard about this game.

    "Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it;
Those who fail to learn history correctly -- why they are simply doomed."

You might say reality is the result of complex negotiations between the observer and the observed. But that is simply a point of view.

The game looks neat, I really hope that they manage to bring back the feel of the older Battlefield games, with slower paced battles and emphasis on teamplay in an arcade setting. This looks promising :

Q: There will be any form of team organisation? Like squads and squad leader?
A: Yes, there will be a squad system with squad leader playing an important role, more details soon.

Q:Hey guys! How do you plan on balancing the game without classes? No classes could mean people running around with sniper rifles all day, and i'm sure it's not what you guys want
A: We have implemented a weight system which influences many other mechanics in the game. Also gadgets and strikes should balance many different play styles. WW3 was designed with paper, rock, scissors system in mind. Thanks for the question

Q: "Will players who like a more supportive roles be rewarded in a relatively equal way to that of the offensive role?"
A: The rewards will be relatively equal, yes. It's important to remember that once you choose to play as a Defender you will gain more points for defensive actions, so you'll have to focus on - for example - defending the capture point more than on attacking individual enemies.

Q: Will playing Objective be more or at least equally rewarded in comparison to "playing for kills"?
A: Completing objectives will be more rewarded than just fragging

Q: What do you think is the percentage balance between teamplay and lone wolf playing in the game? What will happen if I will move far away from the squad?
A: The emphasis in WW3 is put on squad cooperation and player will be rewarded for fulfilling the role of squadmate. You try lone wolf but you won't get points for squad cooperation.

I still don't get the obsession people have with choosing from a gazillion weapons and attachments, but hey if the developpers manage to deliver the game they envisioned, who cares!

I'm one of those people - an old-school gamer that likes unlocking new stuff to freshen up my gameplay and change-up my playstyle. Sadly unlocking stuff through gameplay seems to be getting rarer in modern games, giving way to horrid random loot crate gambling or just outright buying things with real money.

I also enjoy the puzzle of working out which attachments work best with each gun to suit my playstyle. It gives me new things to try out and compare, which I enjoy.

Making those kinds of decisions and working towards unlocks are enjoyable for me - it adds self-set objectives to a game for me, unlocking things I want to try - which, because I decide what to unlock next, is a more meaningful objective to me than just achievements/assignments/dailies set by a developer, that everybody achieves linearly. I don't want my journey through a game to be identical to everyone else.

Unlocks add longevity to a game for me - e.g. I was a lot less interested in playing BF3 after I had unlocked all the guns/attachments/gadgets/vehicle unlocks in it - there was no new stuff to look forward to until DLCs were added.

Also there's the community-building side of being able to chat with Timeless friends about which unlocks they are using on certain guns, what their preferences are, what they would recommend - that's all gone in BFV as everyone will just fill out the same talent trees for their kits.

Also a game with gameplay-awarded unlocks (like guns and/or attachments) is far less likely to be exploited for monetisation than a game with either random loot (or loot boxes) or a credit/token system like BF5's in-game currency (which feels more Battlefront than Battlefield to me and certainly doesn't fit the WW2 theme). I just don't trust EA anymore not to somehow monetise that credit unlock system in BF5 post-launch, like the whole debacle with Battlefront 2 - I don't think they'll be able to resist and stop themselves.

Having now tried BFV I just wasn't that excited by the homogenised kit-wide talent tree system that has replaced the old attachment unlock system from previous Battlefields like BF3/BC2/2142 - it seemed too simplistic, and without many guns/gadgets to chase after - I just know I would have burned out on it really fast if I'd had much compulsion to keep playing. Also it didn't really suit the WW2 theme of the game, having my first Assault unlock being called "faster bullets" and being exactly that - it felt like a bad joke, a perk more suited to a silly sci-fi game like Borderlands than a military shooter series that used to at least care about authenticity.

Hopefully WW3 will do it better.
