View Full Version : PC help and ideas yor thoughts
Right here's the thing my boys need thier own pc now ( school work etc) so i'm going to give them my one, which means i'll need a new one.
Now i'm a bit of a noob  when it comes to understanding all the jargon. So am looking for some advice on the parts i've looked at. ( let face it being a :electric: some things go over my head :) )
mobo Gigabyte MA790GPT
gpu XFX ATI HD5770 1GB
CPU Athlon 2 x4 954 AM3
i've found these at micro direct where i tend to get parts when i need them
any help and advice welcome
You get what u pay for as regards to gfx cards, so spend as much as you can afford here if you plan on gaming.
Get 4gb DDR3 Ram (2x2) - The fastest your mobo can support and your wallet can afford.
and Windows 7 64bit.
Looks great tho m8, wise to go quad core ;)
To give you an idea of the x2 quad prices : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?&groupid=701&catid=6&subid=803&sortby=priceAsc
And gfx (5770) : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?&groupid=701&catid=56&subid=1515&sortby=priceAsc
I recommend you buy the Core i7 ... Power like none other! Just marvellous raw power!
Never seen my CPU go up above 50%, no matter how much I got running :)

i7 is a bit overkill in my opinion, ive also never seen mine go much over 50%, and I have a 2.6Ghz quad phenom......without looking up the i7's, im guessing i saved myself a pretty penny
i7 is the greatest of the great :)

well for a start dont get this processor.... cause it doesnt exist lol, did you mean the Phenom II quad 945 ??
or the number of pins cause there are 938 ni a AM3 processor?
If you are going to get an athlon II quad then the fastest are the 630 or 635
I just brought a 630 for next to nothing thanks to a bit of haggling :)
Gpu spot on good bit of kit, although as its XFX its probably had a good 'tinkering with' so i hope it comes with a healthy warranty
MOBO spot on I always buy gigabyte... solid and reliable + let you OC with ease
However.....................................
I refer to my quote in saba's similar post
what you buy depends on 2 things
1. your budget
2. what you are actual going to use the PC for
i7's are far and away the most powerful CPU's out there.... BUT so what
in the real world, unless you are going to be doing a huge amount of video encoding, or high end graphics (not gaming) then i7 are like daxy says total overkill
the reason for this is hyper-threading/mutli threaded scaling.. or whatever its called.... NO game out there uses this technology to the full (and in most cases at all)
if you add to this the fact that unless you opt for a high end MOBO for an intel chip you PC will be outdated very very quickly
AMD support and future proofing is far far superior... add to this their prices AND the prices of AMD MOBO's then they are far and away the better value
so in my opinion IF all you are going to do is use your PC for general use + gaming then a high end AMD is the way to go
BUT if you are going to be doing any other high end usage then you MUST have intel (preferably i7 1366 although 1156 will be supported for a while longer)
However
that said, PC format this month did a review of CPU's
and there result was a little interesting
there opinion was that the (nehalem) Core i5 750 quad 2.66Ghz was THE best gaming chip out there!!
no chip plays nicer than the Core i5 750
and once again this was because for gaming you dont need any of the fancy gubbins like hyperthreading tech....
AND the fact you can pick one up for as little as £150 + it is socket 1156 which means cheaper MOBO

ive now got a Athlon II 630 quad 2.8Ghz AM3
and ive seen mine go over 50%
i did have about 50 firefox pages open and the 2142CC + 2142 and Vent and x-fire and i was looking at youtube
but then i was trying to stress my new CPU to see what it would do lmao
This tread is getting a little old now, but buy Solid State Drives!
They make the loadings almost disappear :)
windows startup in next to nothing :)
