Windows 8 (Eight)
News is Windows 8 is pencilled in for release of July 2011. :bsod:
Without googlin' I know that it will support 128bit CPU's of which Intel and AMD have in the making (btw)
I can't see us switching to 128bit for a few years tho.
Any news and gossip here please ;)
already?? I mean... Windows 7 is so good!
Iīm affraid that this Windows 8, will be another Windows Millenium episode :D

W7 to Vista feels like ME was to w98 although W7 IS what Vista should of been in the 1st place.
I think they'll be tinkering with this W7 Explorer and that the changes will likely bring us support for present and near future technology compatibilities and driver updates
Its likely to be just visibly different for most of us.
July 2010 is 1.5 years away and they've leaked W8 out a few months ago, plenty of time for a bodged job.

i will as usual not be touching anything by microsoft until everyone else has suffered with the bugs and its all been made to work
which is why i have never had vista (except on the mrs's laptop) and only just got win7
OS's are just sooo darn complicated these days that to my mind its hardly worth the effort of jumping in when they are first released
XP's lauch was a bodge
Vista's launch was a bodge
Win 7's lauch only wasnt classed as a bodge bacuuse everyone was so releived it actually worked ok after the Vista debacle, it still doesnt do everything a 'complete' OS should do for everyone out there...
those of us who havnt got absolutly up to date machines or who havnt got the money to buy decent (high end) machines either end up with a nasty case of Vista (ive decided to class it as a disease from now on) or a machine that cant work correctly with Win7
and that is the vast majority of users out there...
you either have to be a tech head or have plent of spare cash (or spend an unreasonable amount of your income upgrading) to see any benifit from using the latest operating systems.
dont get me wrong I actually LOVE microsoft stuff.... I cant be bothered with linux, ubantu or any other minor OS out there and I HATE Mac with a the same passion i reserve for every company that overcharges for fancy looking garbage...
the PC is the ultimate expression of invidual freedom as far as i am concerned, and nothing so complicated as an OS can be released without at least some bugs
but they should at least be able to give everyone the best without seeming to have them 'inbuilt' into the darn things to start with... its just lazy concidering the amount of cash they actually get for the damn things, and the high inital investment low afterinvestment they have to put into it compaired to any other type of manufactured product we would see. If it was a grphics card youd send it back and buy a different companies instead after all......

Bert, you saying XP was a bodge ??? I for one still think that XP is one of the greatest OSīs that have ever been released.. I remember going from Win ME to XP, I felt so liberated!
Now that Iīve gone from Vista to Win7 I have that same feeling! Win 7 is still the best thing released from Microsoft!
And to all you "look-at-me-I-have-a-Mac!".. Go f*** yourself! :D My passion for the hatred of the douches with their macīs, is unexplainable ;) Mac is an overated piece of junk! They just have the best salesman in the world, thatīs what makes it sell!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx7v815bYUw The best most awesomes greatest gorgeous beautiful stunning apple salesmen ever ;)
And believe me, I watched his promotion of the Ipad... hehe it was just the same.
Not XP (me  XP) itself just its launch, just no where near as bad as the Vista (disease) so its easy to forget,
It did not allow power users to install software they needed (until service pack2) which meant a lot reverted back to ME/2000
XP also got booed
Long-time Windows observers will remember that XP's reception was immensely hostile, and for substantially the same reasons; users migrating from Windows 98 found that the new Windows didn't work with their hardware, didn't work with their software, ran slower, and used more memory. And who would want that? Business users similarly saw little compelling reason to migrate from Windows 2000 (which was then less than two years old), as XP offered them relatively little.
The thing that XP had on its side was time. XP should have been replaced by Windows Longhorn in 2004 or 2005, but the cancellation of the Longhorn project and subsequent wait for Vista meant that everyone—users, software developers, hardware vendors—treated Windows XP as the main (or even only) version of Windows, with the result that everything worked with XP. The early woes were forgotten, and XP, old and clunky as it was, became the version of Windows that everyone loved and adored (or at least, tolerated).
arstechnica.com/microsoft/reviews
this was also ultimately vistas downfall, after all now that all the bugs have been ironed out it is fundamentally a good bit of software (alebet one that uses an unreasonable amount of you system resorces)
and one that was launched with the specific intention of kicking Mac OS into touch... (a completely laudable thing to do in my book)
everyone loves XP, in fact do a google search its pretty hard to find anyone who will slag off XP.... why? because it was around for soooooo long, and it just simply worked so well, the support Microsoft HAD to provide with the service packs just made it better and better. this alone (well with the fact longhorn took a tumble) is the reason that XP was so good and bad at the same time. no other microsoft OS will ever last 13 years for release until support is removed.
but the fact remains they cocked up with the launch
this was particularly bad when it came to drivers (which they managed to do all over again with Vista sigh)
a lot of people couldn't even get their printers working... pain in the arse for the home user... total nightmare for schools/collages and business users...
in itself this wasnt too bad.. after all there are always going to be problems with a launch
but the effective lack of pre-instillation support meant that many users simply didnt know a lot of their software/hardware wouldn't work until after they had installed.
the bizarre thing is that it has taken the launch of what? 10 + major operating systems by microsoft for them to work out that end users actually might need some sort of support PRIOR to them purchasing and installing the program in the first place
the sad thing is that I doubt this is a lesson learned by microsoft , just more of a knee-jerk reaction to the community as a whole's reaction to vista and not wishing to go through the whole embarrassing debacle all over again
The problem about Microsoft now is that they've started bundling the latest DirectX versions with their new OSs. So if you want to see new Dx11 games in the way they were intended to be played, you have to get a newer OS. If they released Dx10/11 as a stand alone upgrade, I might still be on WinXP. But I hate playing games on lower graphics settings/quality, so I'll always be getting the latest kit! Damn me...
As bert stated in his last tread, I do agree that Vista is an execelent OS. It might be somewhat of a pain to users with only 2 gig memory, but I have 8 gig so for me it has always been running smooth.
I really only had a problem with Vista, when I had just gotten it. Because it was not XP.. pretty much the only reason, after following the Vista tweak guides, I found Vista to be superb to XP. Though now I have Win7 and Win7 is just excuisite! ;)

Windows 8 Plans Leaked: Numerous Details Revealed .......2012?
http://msftkitchen.com/2010/06/windows-8-plans-leaked-numerous-details-revealed.html
Some info on W8. ;)
This info is scattered around the net atm.
A garland of new information has sprung adult per Windows 7 and Windows 8, pleasantness of a Russian site wzor.net, that has leaked convincing information before. Because a dates are so distant into a future, however, we’re labeling this one as a rumor.
Service Pack 2 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 has already actively been in growth given tumble 2010. If all goes according to plan, it is reportedly approaching to arrive in mid-2012.
Windows 8, meanwhile, is still in a miracle growth phase; M3 growth will embark in Mar 2011. The OS is scheduled for a really finish of 2012, and a server chronicle will be named Windows Server 2012. Microsoft is reportedly formulation dual betas for Windows 8 and during slightest one will be accessible for open consumption. Three months after a RC is released, Windows 8 will strike a Release to Manufacturing (RTM) milestone. Last though not least, Microsoft skeleton to start offered boxed sell versions of Windows 8 on Monday Jan 7, 2013.
I am very excited for Windows 8! :D
128 bit, if I remember correctly?
128bit support for 128bit CPU's but we wont be using a 128bit OS anytime soon ;)

All the apple freaks are hatin'..
Its real apparently ;)
On a surprising note, that leaked Windows Phone 7 styled login screen that surfaced on the Web on April Fool's Day is also in fact real, as it has reappeared in the latest screenshots, alongside a new File menu setup.
As can be seen from the leaked screenshots, Windows 8 is still far from done wit many obvious gaps in the design. However we do now have a rough picture of what the product will look like when it finally rolls out early 2012.
There have been rumors for quite a while that Windows 8 will have a second, tile-based shell for tablets. More recently, Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have revealed the logon screen for this shell, over at Within Windows.
They posted it on April 1, 2011. Given their history and level of credibility, however, I'm inclined to believe it when they say that it is not an April Fools' day prank, especially given that Microsoft has started pushing Windows 8 builds on Microsoft Connect.
Well I can see the first 'tweak' I will be making lol

I think that there are a lot of people who do not get what a 64 bit does better over a 32 bit so I do not see the excitement to change except of course for those who are computer freaks.
The new windows looks promising in terms of computing power but with the standard windows 7 has set, it would be long before people will jump to the windows 8 bandwagon.
I will jump on it straight away (depending on notable improvements) but as regards to 128bit (if this is what you were referring to) This will take a few years more than the move from 32 to 64bit did ;)
5974Microsoft has bought Skype.
I'm sure they are up to something big, Windows phone 7 combined with skype.
That Windows Table, that reads what you put on it... I'm sure they are up to something really big ;)
Latest news is Windows 8 will be out by end of 2012 ;)
Hehe, i will have to wipe my pc in June in time for BD or a new 2600k, then i'll have to do it again on exchange for W8 (wait)
Anyway, those days of wiping my pc and fresh installing a new OS every few weeks is over, W7 is good for me, lets hope W8 will be better ;)
Ye same here. I don't think I'll jump head first in to Win 8, Win 7 is awesome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92QfWOw88I&feature=channel_video_title
read further up, I told ya Win 7 phone would have something to do with it.
so.....disgusting.......
<your an apple fanboy, your opinion has nothing to say.
Im not an apple fan boy!
That design is applicable to multi-touch tablets and smartphones only.
It is the single must disgusting and unappealing keyboard and mouse desktop interface I have ever seen, period.
You also have the classical controls, thats just an addition to the new touchscreens coming, not to forget the Windows table.
Well thats the way they have been heading for a long time
We are just seeing the beginning of this hemogenised GUI/Os crap
The futures going to be turning your pc on and having your whole online world staring you instantly in your face
Hopfully we will be able to turn all that crap off
EDIT
Dax is right though, its just a GUI for a tablet
Its got naff all to do with power PC & enthusiast use

It'll be a 'Windows Vista' operating system which they say they wish they'd never released.
Then they'll release Windows 9 which will be excellent ;)

Only Time will tell, but I'm sure a lot of us folks in Film and TV will be getting the new windows, just for those 128 bits.
How much Ram can such an OS of 128 bit handle? The double of 64 bit? or how does it work?

It works exponentially Kharak. Each bit can have a 0 or 1. And because of this there are 2^n possibilities, where n is the number of bits. Each of these values corresponds to an address in the memory, which has a byte of data stored on it. So n bits can address 2^n bytes.
For eg, 1 bit
1
0
Two bytes
2 bit
00
01
10
11
4 bytes
So 32 bits can address 2^32 = 4294967296 bytes, that is 4GB of data. That is why in 32 bit systems you only see 3.3GB RAM, cos the rest of the bits are used to address video RAM.
128 bits can therefore address = 316912650057057350374175801344GB of data.
PS. The total data in the world is currently esitmated at 2^70 bytes(According to Wikipedia), 128 bit can address almost twice of that.

So basically what you are saying is.. That I can put so much Ram in to my computer that I will never afford to put it to the max?

Basically what I'm saying is even if you could afford it, there isn't enough RAM in the world to put into your PC. ;)

Thats a good thing... Windows wont be slow for me then ;) when I buy a Server box and use it for editing ;)
