Lolz, nice to know. This degradation is why i always go for cable. We recently moved home

and if we did not have cable in the area we would of had to of looked for another house lolz.

Still, BT and the likes are currently changing a lot to fibre optic and upgrading a great deal

of their lines, exchanges etc - good luck with that. ;)

i had 3 mb line and was always 3 mb + then when i upped to 7 mb i had less than 1 at times, i shouted at them and told them the whole story and they eventually put me onto the low latency lines :) wankers the lot of them, shout and scream till they give u what u pay for ;) and the old threaten them with goin to their biggest competitor always works.

edit : and remember the customer is always right no matter how wrong they are with big companies like isp's

well, i pay for 8 and now get 7.6 after we moved closer to an exchance,
 the little fact they dont tell you, your line speed is alo affected by that little green junction box on the corner of some streets. where we used to live the junction box was like 20 feet away getting 8.2mbps now the junction box is a street away & we lost half a meg , ( if your paying for 8 on BT & get less, phone them up & ask for a price reduction on your package) i did & got £5 pm knocked off for losing 0.6mbps :) worth thinking about :good2:

I found this site is good. You can just press the button on the main page to test your download and upload rate.

Also, type in your package and your post code and it'll give you the ACTUAL speed you can receive, and where your local exchange is.

Distance is a factor alright, but it's not the only factor in what determines your download speed. Contention on the line is another big issue. Typically your ISP's will allocate 1 line to be shared between 10 or so houses. The logic here is that you never have more than 2 or 3 people downloading at the same time - for the most part that's correct though your screwed if your living in an estate with internet savvy residients.

Windows XP users:
If you are running Windows XP and you *HAVE NOT* optimized your TCP-IP stack, you need to go away and get yourself an optimizer. You can do it yourself by changing the registry settings, but it's pretty involved. a) you probably wouldn't know what to change and b) it's easier to get an optimiser on the net for nought. When I did this my download speed jumped from 3mb to 10mb *ON THE SAME LINE*. I won't go into why the difference here (it's pretty complex), but trust me you might get similar results.

Before doing this, go to www.speedtest.net and do three runs and average all three. then install http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe - The link is safe and no spyware/adware.

and once you do that, run 3 more runs and average that.

If you are running Vista/Win7, you won't get any benifit as they fixed the TCP/IP stack, so don't bother. (Just accept the default settings. )

ehm yeah BT are awful for me, we pay for 8 meg, we get 5 on a good day, but on most days it can range from 0.5 - 2mb which kinda sux and not only that i get a 40 ping to uk server, which isnt that bad but when u play competitivly against german players they wont play in nothing but a german server, so i ping 60 while they ping anything from 4-15 so yeah its a pain in the arse tbh, so my connection + wireless = no hitreg for mitch :(

If I had a penny/cent for everytime I heard the low ping verses bandwidth thingie - I'd have about 2 euros 47 now :-)

OK, since not everyone is a network engineer I'll explain this one. PING has VERY little to do with bandwidth. I repeat, PING HAS VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH BANDWIDTH. You could have a ping of 60 with a 20mb/s broadband connection, and on the same machine have a ping of 20 on a different ISP's 2mb/s link to the same server. It's to do with how the packets get routed through the internet (the path choosen, the latency on the routers, the number of routers etc)

"Ping" is the amount of time that a TCP/IP package takes to round trip from your machine to the server and back again. If the server is far away, electricity even as fast as it is takes a few miliseconds to get there and then the server has to send a response to you. This is why we in europe never see an American server with pings less than 40-50 or so.

Increasing bandwidth might slightly increase your ping time if you were maxin'g out your old connection, but usually it's going to do nothing for you other than being able to download Terminator 4 on a torrent quicker.

If you are running XP and your not getting your full bandwidth allocation, the first thing I'd try is the TCP optimizer (previous post). that sets things called Windowframe sizes and MTU chunks (look em' up) which was a problem in XP as the TCP stack when it was written wasn't really designed with the bandwidths that we see today on broadband. (Hell 10 years ago i was still on a 56.K modem)

I've seen 100% improvements on download speed doing that. Vista and Win7 have the "fixed" TCP.IP stack so there's little point running the optimizer on those platforms.
