View Full Version : update my system
ok guys, I;m thinking about updating my system soon, havnt done it in a while so may need a few pointers
already have a good sound card, hi res 24" monitor, gaming mouse etc so I dont need and periferals
currently use AMD 3700, 4Gb pc3200, gigabyte mainboard Sli, and two geforce 5600's over a SLi bridge, bla bla HDD etc... (told you I havnt updated in a while lol)
so this is what I have been thinking
CPU> AMD Phenom 9950 Socket AM2+ Quad-Core Processor
>>Click<< (http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=CPA-AP995GH-B)
I like AMD I know they hav'nt been performing aswell as intel for a while but francly every intel system I have ever had has been rubbish so I dont like em...
Mainboard> Asus Crosshair II Formula AM2, SLI, DDR2,SATA2,7.1Snd, ATX
>>Click<< (http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=MBA-CRIIFORM)
this has the nforce 780a chipset, which means 3 graphics cards over the SLi bridge :)
alway been a firm beleiver in the more the merrier lol
Graphics Cards (times 3) > XFX 512Mb GeForce 9800 GTX+ PCI-Express

Memory> Corsair TwinX 4Gb DDR2-8500 DOMINATOR™

Power supply> Enermax EMD625AWT 625W MODU 82+ PSU

Hi Bert ...
nice plan you have - but - if you invest a lot of money you should reconsider going the amd and triple sli way. Why ?
Amd CPU: lacks performance and Intels are not that much more € wise
Triple SLI: Can be a pain in the a** driverwise - why use 3 gpus if you run into probs and need more time to cure the probs than use the system.
My friends i recom in the moment:
Board: Intel P45 Chipsset Board like an Asus P5Q Deluxe or an DFI LP UT P45 T2R
CPU: Intel Q9550 or Q9450
GPU: AMD/ATI 4870X2 (Sapphire ...) and if you realy want a 2nd one .... less probs than with SLI.
Just my 5 cents on that .... :pint:

Yeah nice setup man, like pete said intel, have the upper hand atm, also why send 100 on a nice case, that to be 100% honest just sits thier and collects dust, your much better of trying to get a case with good air flow, like this http://www.antec.com/usa/productDetails.php?lan=us&id=81800# or the one i have http://www.antec.com/usa/productDetails.php?lan=us&id=15300
Might not look nice and flashy, but its whats in the case that matters :good1:
Yup, go for intel at this time, amd hasnt caught up yet

Pete I didnt know there were still issues with the triple SLi stuff.
still to be honest I probably would only end up with two cards anyway
because the actual benefit of three cards isnt that great, whereas two cards improve the system well on all the benchmarking I have seen (2x to 2.8x with the three card setups vrs 1.8x to 2x with the two card)
could end up with a measly 15% increase in performance for the outlay of 1 extra card

well I must admit I'm a sucker for shiney things, my present thermaltake case has got more neon on it than the Las Vegas strip lol
was concidering this case mind you

I like the look of that one
http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=407613
although I prefer Nvidia to ATI
question though (and i say this as a total AMD convert over the years)
with the high end stuff is the increase in performance you would get with a high end intel card realy that necessary concidering the increased cost no a like by like basis?
just thisnking because most high end systems simply aren't going to be that tasked with applications and games in there present state

Remember if intel make sure all parts of rig are itel approved otherwise u may get the odd conflict and the other thing AMD have yet to show that they can run as cool as Intel befor duel core I would have put all my chips in with AMD as they were by far the best to over clock not so any more Intel at the mo are the one and are easy to over clock if you want too

@Bert:
Gfx: Tuck in 1 4870X2 and save the money for the 2nd nvidia and buy your better half something nice :)
Overclocking wise Intel is right now far better than our amd friends. Q9450/Q9550 at QX9770 (~1100€) speed is more than easy and normally (depends on the cooling) 4GHz x 4 are not out of reach with aircoolling :p ... try that with an amd quad ....
If you want to go extreme - drop socket 775 and go socket 1366 with a Intel I7. On the X58 boards you can run crossfire or sli, just as you like and as i think your new righ should be there for a while ... maybe also consider that.
@Apollo:
Not that much Intel probs anymore, normally tuck in what you want and it works. Only limitation you have if you get a Intel branded board - there are limitations - but who get´s an board from intel if there are Asus/GB/DFI etc around :p
ye like appollo said amd can run hot. im a big fan ov amd but had to change over to intel as they dont get as hot and if u like things extreme and over clock its like having a volcano next to u lol
i oppted for the 2.66 quad
asus strika formula2
4 gig ddr
a nice new 280gtx
hyper 880 psu
lots ov hdd space
2 moniters
24" for gaming 17" running ts vent and msn
and lots ov snazzy toys lol
just waiting to get new case (coolermaster haf 932 or cmos1100)
Don't know if i'm too late, but i wouldn't go with a Hyper PSU. They are well know for failing.
