Actually I love the documetary on SKY.

One of my current favourites is Holmes on Homes. Canadian builder goes into homes that have ben wrecked by cowboy builders and redoes them top spec. Joy to watch the craftsmen.

I've been watching a few documentaries by Richard Dawkins lately, I watched his Christmas Lectures from 1991 last, the Christmas Lectures are always good to watch.
I've seen a lot of footage and read books by this guy, he puts things simply.
If you are religious you may not appreciate his theories. Some info here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Dawkins

i just finished viewing this huge (by its lentgh and quality) documentary on WW2. it gives you an intimate and moving insight on what this war was all about.

whatever you watch about wars - the film makers can´t get a chance of being objective. it´s always a kind of polemic submessage in it due to the fact that every side sees itself as the victim.
i have been told many stories about the war from my grandfather and it must have been a horrible time and people suffering on every side. and when you hear these stories they give you a very intimate view of what´s happened and this i´d like to hear much much more than some kind of mainstream movie.

that's what this documentary is really about firestarter. how simple american recruits coped with the war and death surrounding them and how their relatives lived that situation back home. the people interviewed are now old and wise enough to talk about those experiences without any kind of hatred. the testimonies are more about their feelings, emotions and thoughts on what being on the front line was like.
i think this piece of work could to a certain extent apply to any other war no matter which side you are on. the subjects treated are just universal to any man, which to my mind makes this documentary a masterpiece.

a few films which i found to be quite different (and very gritty) from what the usual war movies are about: guns blazing, glamorized deaths and the hollywood star having his heroic moment.

niii m8 you write english that perfect - you can´t be from france lol. :)

and as for the movie. i just saw the credits on the imdb with tom hanks as first actor and thought it was another "saving private ryan".
well but if you say it´s that good i´ll give it a try.

hehe i guessed tom hanks might have been the problem here. if you can get hold of it, let us know your thoughts about the film.
my mother is british so it helps quite a lot. but sadly i am not totally fluent and i also have the worst kind of french accent...

thanks to you hornet, i have been watching a few videos on richard dawkins lately. while i was browsing the web to find more from him i came across this site
http://www.ted.com/index.php in which he appeared as a guest lecturer.
has to be my number two favorite website after timeless of course

ray mears rules, it has been some time i haven't seen any of his programs though.
i remember an episode in which he was canoeing down a canadian river and kept being bitten by midges. the poor guy's face was all red and you could see him depressed by the whole situation.
