My new PC bits arrive tomorrow (Saturday). I really hope that Vista doesn't play up once I have fitted all my new parts.

Asus Striker Extreme Motherboard
Q6600 Intel 3.30 (overclocked)
4 GB RAM

I have heard rumours that Vista throws a fit when you fit new things. I remember changing my graphics cards once and Vista had to go through the whole activation process again - pah!

Yea you will have probs with re-activation if you use a non-retail copy of Vista

as you will be changing your mobo. U goin 64 bit then as u got 4gb ram?

Also.. what cooling you using for the Q6600?

I have a genuine version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have 3 GB atm as it hated 4 GB for some odd reason. But I put that down to my mobo and the fact Vista sucked.

I will be stunned if it all goes to plan. Cooling? 5 hamsters on a wheel! But water cooled.

Is about time I changed my AMD FX55, which has been a superb processor when i bought it new (£800!!!!) but I will never spend that kind of cash again on a processor.

I could use some help or advice here.

Firstly, I know how crap Vista Ultimate is. Anyway, 5 hours on, I still havent managed to upgrade my PC thanks to Vista.

I put all the new parts in nicely - New mobo, processor and ram but then it wouldnt boot up. I went through the stupid process of 'starting in safe mode' - failed.

Anyway, I have now installed my old mobo/processor so i could come online. I was lazy and have only 1 hard drive with Vista on it and all of my work. I now have a 2nd SATA drive but its not picking up on the boot up. It probably needs to be formatted but how on earth can i do that in bios?

help! lol

Well i gotta disagree.. There were teething problems with Vista

and SP1 has sorted a great deal out. You can love or loath vista

but this ain't helpin capt sort his problems.

Have you got a 2nd PC so that we can help you out while you sort this?

Can you shed any more light on your problems/error messages you are getting

and how far you have got Vista installed?

Give us some more details. ;)

Ring up microsoft and ask for a new OEM key, bend the rules a little.. works wonders.

:( still no joy yet. So I am staring at a total reformat of my hard drive. :( The new HD I bought wouldnt reformat under ****ty vista then burnt out!

External HD now to transfer my important files. This will take all night as it takes Vista a decade to move 1kb files!

Cya tomorrow

lol too true m8. only got vista on my laptop (it came with it) my other machines still run xp (and will do until i stop hearing people say how bad vista can be)

coincidentally (probably not helpful now but) if you need to format a disc with "bios" all you actually need to do is set up a win98 boot disc (provided you still have a floppy that is) you can then format a disc from the dos-prompt, it'l be fat32 but vista will detect it. and then you can work from there (prolly need to reformat again but it will detect it)
done this myself in the past.
get a boot disc from here http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

you should be able to move files using this too

Why u need a boot disk? Format option right at the beginning of vista installation.

I really do believe there is a lot of this goin on....

I will admit to a few issues when vista was released but i see nothin

nowadays post sp1 and up til then i would say that there

were only performance issues.... so why is it ok for me? Luck? pfft :p

People don't like change imo its easy to blame your tools.

Capt... any further forward m8?

Because Vista is crap, I have had to reformat. Its utter rubbish, lets face it. It really puts people off upgrading their system because of the fuss it puts you through.

Since Vista is supposed to have all these drivers installed, why on earth it can't detect the changes automatically, then update itself is beyond me. Lucky for me I am a seasoned pro at this terrible OS. OFF goes the pointless Vista nanny from the start!

Well, 12 hours later I am up and running and have to spend all day Sunday reinstalling my games, files blah blah blah. Vista is simply rubbish

true m8, just suggestin that cause he said vista would not detect the disc (so that he could format it) i was assuming it was set up ok and the bios was detecting it cause thats a basic step. like i said prolly not useful when i said it lol

To be honest mate you are right, but while i still see so many comments that vista causes problems (particularly when changing hardware) i think i will be reluctant to change my os (on my games machine) for now. That said not had a problem yet with my laptop.

hope you have got this solved Capt.

My rant continues. Not only is Vista crap, so is Outlook. I cant understand why I bothered to archive my emails/settings as it has made no difference. It remembered the folders but not the actual content/email. All lost!

Thanks Microsoft, I love you to

Probably because they want people with OEM version to go and pay an extra £80 everytime they upgrade hardware.
