Anyone know how easy it is to replace a processor? I.e., should I not bother, should I get a professional to do it or is it reasonably simple?
Its Easy To Do M8 - Timeless Will Help U.
1st take the fan off which is just a case of unclipping it then take chip out and place new chip in. ashoof and others sometimes take some soft and hard sandpaper to it to increase conductability but this is not required for the normal user hehe.
Then just put fan back on securely and make sure it clips in appropriately and your good to go.

Hehe, probably good time to mention that my CPU doesn't need a fan at the moment :p, it's only an AMD 3500+, hence why I've been planning on upgrading it

or www.ebuyer.com is always good value.

Thanks guys
Very easy to do m8, not too much and not too little Thermal Interface Material
though m8 (the grease you stick between CPU and heat sink)

Lots of video links around here.
You'll be limited to what your mobo will support. You can buy a new cheap
mobo for around £30 which will support the latest chips but you may be wise
to spend a little more m8. Good luck

Hmm, I might get a professional to refit a new motherboard with a new processor, I just need to get enough money
i had to get instuctions via webcam from ashoof fitting motherboard and proccesor.
worked eventually.
technology these days.

Now did u mean thing or thingi?
The thingi can get too hot if u don't put enough wotsit on it.
Patch the crack with what? Polyfilla?

ok after extensive testing i found that the best to use for patching is wrigleys juicy fruit, still working on the crack i had to take a lot of sh1t out of it first so bit behind on the testing of that. :-)

Is it a socket 939 or the later AM2 socket that you have. If it is Skt 939 you are pretty restricted to what CPU you can upgrade to, also you have the problem finding a retailer who sells them now.
If it is AM2 there is a good selection of processors that you can fit, I would suggest that you look up your mobo details on the web and this will let you know which CPU's you can use and also if you need a BIOS update.
I know it sounds complicated but if you don't need a BIOS update it is very easy to replace your CPU.
I would look for a CPU from Scan, Ebuyer, Aria and overclockers uk. I would also buy an Atric Freezer HSF for about £15 to cool the CPU.
Any other questions just post and I'll try to help.

Thanks, checked on the website and it's a 939, so looks like I'm pretty much screwed unless I buy a new motherboard. Thanks very much for the help guys, as I'm looking at doing Computer Engineering at University I might be able to persuade my parents to buy me a super-powerful one in a few years. Guess I'll just have to wait...
