My work just got one of those salary sacrifice thingys so I can get a bike tax free.

It's been suggested that I get some regular exercise.

I'm moving later this year and I will be able to cycle to work.

I know nothing about bikes and haven't ridden regularly since 2002.

The bike must come from Halfords - any recommendations?

I'll be using it mainly for cycling to work but would like to ride on less stable surfaces occasionally. I suppose the lighter the better too considering my build.

Thanks

oh and I don't like those silly bendy handlebars like we had on 'racers' when we was kids. BMX's were miles cooler.

I commute on a mountain bike and the things i'd recommend are as follows:

1) Don't get full suspension - if you're going to do some 'off-road' just get a 'hardtail' (front suspension only)

2) Don't get disc brakes. They're expensive and completely un-necessary on a push bike.

3) Get a cheap model of a decent make - don't get a good model of a crap make. Halfords probably do makes like Kona, GT these are OK - avoid the cheap brands they sell (is it apollo or something?)

4) If you're going to be riding it on the road get high pressure road tyres. It's amazing how much off-road moutain bike tyres slow you down on a road (make you work much harder)

these are just some of my observations :)

Cheers

I've ridden 3 basic bycicle models over the last 10 years, most i've ridden was the normal mountain bike,no suspensions no disk brakes,i've tried one with full suspension and it blows,it will prolly throw u off or summit,my suggestion, get a normal mountain bine, maybe with suspension only on the front, cause there u wanna put a road type tyre,u know the one that isnt so wide and more slick looking, and on the back one of those off-road ones with big spikes,if u will,

Make sure u get a bike with a double, triangular profile, weel..u know..the thing that holds the tyres, dont know how u call it in english.Oh and dont get a downhill handle bar imo..they good in traffic cause they less wide but u will grow to hate them:P.
