Hello All,
I've decided to make the jump to Vista at last, as it seems to have more support now and some proper drivers.
The question is, is there a lot of difference between the various versions?
And, 64 bit or 32 bit?
Cheers.
Think the Ultimate is supposed to be really good but the Home Premium does it for most guys.
Depends what you wan't to spend i suppose.
I wouldn't make the jump just yet. Think i'll wait another 6 month's.
hunter i would say Go for 64 bit as me and G-zap is using it and it is running very very good the reason i am recomanding 64 bit cuz it can adress 4Gb or More of a RAM
and since the Vista is very memory hungry OS playing Bf2143 with 4GB vista 64 is nice cuz when play the game with vista 64 bit 2.3 GB is already chewd :)
just my 2.57 cent
I'm waiting until they release SP1 for it, then I'll consider it. :)

Will i see any difference then if i go 64bit for gaming? Currently got 3gb ddr2 ram with a dual core.

How far away is SP1? might be worth waiting for a while if its not to far...
Cheers

Yeah you will see a big performace hit
Bf2142 is a 32 bit game using dx9 optimised for a single core, as are most current games.
So XP pro is a no brainer.
Why wait for sp1, it's just a bundle of updates that most vista users will already have automatically installed via windows update.
The drivers are mostly there or being improved and I think the emphasis for vista is on the 64 bit drivers not the 32 bit ones.
As for which version, I completely behind what ashoof said, vista already munches away almost a gig of memory just browsing the web with supreme commander users pushing well over 2 gb. So in less than 1 year vista 64 bit will be a requirement to be able to play the latest games at highest settings, hell I think before this year is over that will already come into play as 4gb will be needed with the upcoming games on ultra high settings.
I got vista ultimate 64 but only use xp pro because of gaming but in 3 months I will be mainly using vista because of gaming too :D
I don't know why there is a 32 bit version I guess microsoft wanted to milk the pentium d and core duo users but the 32 bit version can't run 64 bit apps whereas the 64 bit can run 32 bit apps and the 32 bit version probably will run into problems if a single app uses more than 2gb whereas the only thing that will matter with the 64 bit one is how much memory you have installed.
Vista is the last 32 bit os for users with 32 bit cpus, for people with 64 bit cpus, vista 64 is a no brainer.

Ashoof you seriously have too much time on your hands, points at ridiculous avatar pic
lmao
Edit: was just looking for some official thing on crysis but couldn't find it, but it does seem that you will get a performance boost in 64 bit gaming with Crysis which will be both 32 bit and 64 bit.
my Vote gose for fahita 64

I see 64 bit like this m8.... Imagine a large room with 32 doors full to the brim of 1 Billion people and these people gotta leave the room asap as ashoof is near the center stripping to his Y-fronts..... Now imagine how quickly these people could leave with 64 doors ? Bring on 1 kilobit i say..... Anyway this is vaguely how 32/64 bit works. There are 32 trace lines coming from the cpu to the rest of the system, RAM, chipset etc with a 32 bit CPU and 64 lines from a 64 bit cpu. If u gotta 64 bit CPU and a 64 bit operating system using compatible 64 bit drivers.... U gonna get away from ashoof really quick ! ;) There are other advantages too tho... i totally agree with ashoof and G-zap on this but for the simple fact that the microshite world ain't quite ready for 64 bit (its getting better)as there is a lack of drivers for all sorts of things, which is why myself, i got 32 bit vista (reverting from 64 bit vista) and i'm dual booting with 32 bit XP for compatibility with old progs and gaming etc.... Like they say tho, we gonna need 4-8GB ++ RAM just now with DX10 and more bandwidth etc needed to run a DX10 game effectively(pending even faster DX10 GFX cards) As there are limitations to how much ram u can use via a 32 bit OS too, a 64bit OS is a must for any near future PC enthusiasts and PC gamers. ;)

"windows Vistashit" Honest to got that was money down the drain i hated vista!
xp is what im back on now!
Vista has its annoyances for sure.... if you're moving many files from one drive to another you're better off doing this with XP and thats after the recent performance pack update for vista. I do generally think Vista is better, security etc But i do feel we need service pack 2 as soon as possible as service pack one does not much to boost performance IMO

Personnaly, at this time, i would'nt recommend Vista anyway.
It still has a lot of bugs and is'nt stable just yet.
I know that there will be games comming out shortly that will only run under Vista,
but right now, if you have XP installed with Service Pack 2, you're better off for now.
I thought about getting it too a few days back untill i read about those problems somewhere.
As some people allready say about Vista:
