Copy and paste from a PM-
Medieval 2 was probably the worst in the series. It looked good but the AI was shocking.
Ive got Empire and the combat AI is better and it does try to out flank you alot but its still nothing special but does put up a good fight. I still think Rome:Total War had the best AI.
The campaign AI however, is a different story. It cant figure out how to send troops using the sea and rarely attacks - even on the highest settings.
Once these are fixed, it will be an incredible game. Graphics are good, the tech tree is cool - you can research what you want now and make up trade routes etc - which are vital to gain extra ££££
Its worth getting!
absolutely agree about medieval II, it was a real disapointment. the AI was a big letdown and patches seemed to make it worse overall.
i think i had the best campaign games with a modded version of Rome (total realism i think it was called) and proper bloodbaths with medieval I which i miss.

The one thing I have noticed with Empire is how the enemy AI manages to pull extra troops 'out of his back pocket'. Several times now I'm winning a battle and then extra troops just appear! These guys havent come out of any woods. Im going to fraps the next one.
Im fighting in the US now and the AI has pulled an extra 500 troops - after my 400 just repelled over 700. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
