I was just wandering around the net, I came across some stats:

The first two games I have played quite a bit, ie Counter Strike and Source then there is BF2 which I even played a bit of last week, whipping out my joystick and jumping in a plane :D
But back to the point, as you can see BF2142 is bleeding players, it's all time high when it was released at 18k, currently it has dropped to only 7.5k while BF2 is currently double that at 15k.
I just find it strange for a new game, also neither Quake Wars or Crysis is out yet.
What do you guys think?

you know what when 2142 came out bf2 players was rushing out to try it some have stayed some gone back one of the reasone i think is that 2142 need alot of cpu memory resorces that most of the game server provider could not offer lats take titan for example a 48 players titan require more cpu usege the say 64 player server maybe a 100 or more so game server provider could mark up in price high
most of the game server provider use sharing server i know some run alot of them and slow the hell of the game play
secand point is 64 player need i think 8 mbit/sec of band width for a server now all game server provider hate the idiea of the server running 24/7 cuz basiclay when server is of (no player) no bandwidth usedge i think thats when thay make the mony
now ppl have come to play 2142 with thier server and some could not cop with the demand of this game as far the hardware requirment thay shoot back to bf2
the new upcomming game need hell of alot of power to run them and that whats the programer doing now a days :)
Most people i know all still plays bf2, they say bf2142 is too buggy and it's like CSS where as bf2 is like cs 1.6 (Don't really understand what they mean by that).
I really hope that the players pick up again at some point.. I'd really hate a game to die that i like so much and have spent a lot of time playing.
I think the ranks don't help this issue either to be honest, some players like a challenge and see ranks as challenges but when you only need 57k points to get to the top reasonable rank then it kinda ruins the important targets behind the game, 57k worth of points wouldn't even get you halfway through the ranks on bf2, don't understand why EA have set such low points required for the ranks.

well after playing 2142 for about 3 or 4 months after it came out, i think i can say for sure that im tired of it, the gameplay, maps, weapons, aircraft (especially the gunship.bleargh) Imo arent as good as their counterparts in bf2 and i also tend to get especially angry when i play 2142.
im waiting for the new Timeless BF2 server..aaaany day now.
Need more maps, more badges/medals/pins/ribbons more vehicals, more expansion packs, more great servers like Timeless, less pillocks who play, less cheats, more EA support and more cider. ;)

I don't think another expansion is due, if they could fix all the crash to desktop's, disconnects, lag, glitching, whole computer freezing ( which I have only experienced with this game on my pc running xp pro), also the ranking system is atocious, the top rank should only be acheived after 200k career points.
Finally they need to release 3 very good maps as a free addition to the game in an update, simple because it does not have enough content as it is.

more planes etc , the dogfights in bf2 in the jets piss all over 2142's heli thingy mabob
that is 1 thing that i am disapointed with 2142, that is one thing where i think 2142 dont come close to bf2

Personally i never liked the planes in BF2 thought they used to ruin the game, you get one good pilot in a jet and he could single handedly win the round or drive most of the opposition to leave, but yes the vehicles are very poor in 2142, also you need lots more maps for FREE! i dont appreciate paying admittedly only 6 quid for 3 maps which our at best average and should have been included from the start.
i also remember buying armoured fury for BF2 think i even managed to find a server with some people on once too LOL.

I think ash is refering to the fact another expansion is needed asap. Also i don't think we should be paying for the next expansion as NS was hardly an an expansion, to be fair i'd say it was more like a big update. We need more non-NS gear, vehicles etc and these should be included in the next update along with some more anti cheat precautions etc etc

The jets and gunships in BF2 are probably the single biggest reason I'm still playing BF2142 rather than going back to BF2.
lets see what EA will do to bring 2142 back
Some more maps would be nice. They could release them combined with patches like Jalalabad in BF2, at least then everyone will have them. I like the Northern Strike maps, but by forcing people to pay for them EA are limiting the number of people who will have them, and also the number of server that will support them.

i was beta tester for ns too. for this addon i paid on march the 8th 10,00 €
but i think i will no more pay for this addons looks like ns ore else. this is nothing else looks like a great patch and this on alle the players must have for free. two vehicles and a little bit of weapons......
when ea wil have money for new maps ore else i think battlefield 2142 is dying
Although i agree with tekram to an extent, if u ask yourself is NS worth £6 then you'd prob say yes as there has been hours of play for me on NS, medals to gain etc and i did feel left out when a server i was usin switched to a NS map and i had to go... but on the other hand.... we should of all had this for free, nobody should be left out. I would like to see the Goliath and speeders added to some conquest oe even titan maps with an option for the server to leave the goliath out. Would be interesting seeing the goliath on maps with titan guns and tanks.

City maps ftw. Id play BF2 but i dont like the medal and ranking system compared to 2142, but then that doesnt say much because i just dont wana play 2142 anymore either.
So yes it isssssssssssss har har.

I prefer 2142, it is far more balanced in BF2 near on every map and vehicle within it was unbalanced.
Although I feel that 2142 is dying a short sharp painful death at the moment.
What is killing the game is not the game itself but the bugs.
Things like punkbuster running as a service because some idiots can not be bothered to switch to an administrative account in windows and screwing things up in general, hackers which bypass punkbuster's purported protection and the lag you get whenever you do something more than just stand there.
This game could have been really, really good, but the game is dying a quick death to the bugs and problems.

Yeah i agree, theres somethin missing. Also i'm gettin annoyed witht he amount of cheats and cheat progz that are around. This is somethin a big company like EA and the likes need to look into BIGTIME !! U can pay 30 quid for a game and double that for a game cheat lmao... somethin smells very fishy here.

Seeing this now almost a year or so later, its good to see that the game hasnt died yet. However it hasnt really much improved either, if u give the link ( http://www.onlinegamingzeitgeist.com/games/ for pps who dont want to read it all) a hit you will see that BF2142 has been in a recline for many months, gotten a bit better i think with 1.5 and then its downwards again. why? tubes. j/k. why? look at Horn3ts quote, i think it nails it. Specially the cider part.
While i dont hope that the 2142 dies, im afraid it will some dayy, depending on how BF3 turns out to be.
what do you think, now, at this stage>?

yep let´s see how bf3 will be and depending on that people will decide if i go on with 2142.
but i have to say: you probably can´t beat a good round with timeless peeps on timeless 2142 servers. that´s probably impossible.
i don´t need new maps either. i´m happy with the few titan maps. if i want change i´ll play a lil gib or cq and get my a§§ pwned.
but istill: if bf3 arrives there will hopefully be a timeless bf3 server :good1:

Its not dead yet so :rdxparty: away till it is :)
while servers are still full then its not dead
and you still have to wait for a space on good servers then its not dead
we all know its goona die sometime but that dont look like soon
at the end of the day, some will get bored and move onto other games and some will stay.
and i certainly dont think its gonna die until after BF3 comes along

as long as we got good timeless servers good admins and good m8s it wont .
lets face it rdx and a timeless server we could take over the world ? well almost lol

It'll get to a point where hardly anyone quits playing.
All games will fluctuate, thousands of people still play MOHAA, and I used to play that game when 20Gb hard drives were legendary. Around 6 years ago now?
Dont think its dieing, the BF series tend to always have playing people, BF:1942 still does, Ive played 2142, on and off for 2 yrs now and sure its boring sometimes but what game isnt.
And there is always gonna be new players discovering the game.

This might be slowing down but the graphics are still some of the best in game to day and players might need a break lol
