Try using IE for default brower while install / use origin for the first time.
EA says you need version * 3 X to run bf3/win7 (go figure), apparently origin initial release was made for vista & XP. My origin still says Beta, but is Version 8.3.1.9 - 108188.
Download a clean copy of origin, uninstall your old one,, then goto program files (x86) / Origin, delete any leftovers, install your clean copy.
FW- no matter where i have looked @ EA cant find the ports Origin uses, but why should you have to portforward? doesnt make sence
side note: apparently if you have a DVD version sometimes origin says downloading when installling, yup it does download redistributables etc & a patch, but it also says downloading even when just installing the game.
EA help is not very helpful.

A have read that some people have had similar problems in my country and its was caused by ISP. Solving this they started to download the BF3 with different connection like neighbors wlan or with cellphone with internet connection. You dont need to download whole game with it, only few kb's and download rest with normal connection... could be worth to try if there is possibility to use different IPS for a while.
EDIT: thread from EA http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/30/7563168.page
few quotes from there:
Grandescape
In english: When you are starting your download in Origin try to use some other internet provider cos it seems that some internet providers have issues with starting your download. Even a slow connection will do. Just start your download with different internet connection and accept download agreement and when Origin starts to download switch back to your main internet provider/connection and it should work. At least in my case did.
Hope this will help

My mate in France had this problem in beta - sadly it was one of things that put him off buying BF3 :(

If you can find the game files (Battlefield 3 folder) from a friend, you cant drop it in origin cash folder. Then login in origin and game is ready for instal. I did that in my 2 pc.

I came across this in the EA forum,
http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlefield-3-pc/1433200-stuck-ready-install.html#post20244927
"{SOLVED it}
cause -I had the same issue it happened after origin stopped responding and had to end prosses.
solution - navigate to your "origin games" folder (if in win7 64bit "program files(x86)/origin games") once in the origin games folder find the game that is not installing open that folder (example C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 3)
then *find the folder called "install" and delete it.
*now logout of origin then log back in and select the game and click download then install.
note if it was fully downloaded before the problem it should jump to 99% and be done fast no reformat needed lalalala... hope this helps"
Dont know if it will help but its worth a try
I guess you have vista or win 7.
Maby you need to install all windows updates if you havent?
I feel sorry for you not be able to play and i wish i could help you.
Dax and Faceman had this idea that i take my pc to my m8 house to try it out since he been able to play the thing

And dont forget, you can copy game folder (origin cach) to other pc and instal it. I did that to instal in other pc .
Ash, let me know if this works, I am in touch with someone at DICE who I can pass you on to if you still cant get it to work.
